Epoxy Resin FAQs, Tips & Advice
Epoxy Resin FAQs
We frequently are asked a variety of questions about how to best utilize epoxy resin, product tips and other advice by crafters, do-it-yourselfers as well as business and commercial professionals. And while our website support section features a section of guides and FAQs – and our weekly blog highlights timely and innovative epoxy resin applications and projects – we’d thought a piece on some often-asked questions would serve you, our readers, well. So without further adieu – here are some Epoxy Resin FAQs with tips and advice to optimize your use of this wondrous polymer…
What is epoxy resin and why is it so much better than other products?
Epoxy resin is a two-part thermosetting polymer consisting of the resin itself and a hardener. When combined, these two materials cause a chemical reaction that creates heat – which changes the liquid epoxy to a solid. It is this process – and the solid created – that bring about the epoxy resin properties of superior bonding, coating and sealing that so many rely on for a wide variety of products and projects.
What materials will adhere to epoxy resin?
Epoxy resin will bond, coat, fill and adhere to myriad materials including wood, most metals, plastics, glass and concrete/masonry. Plus, epoxy resin is a great choice to bond diverse materials together, as well as provide an excellent filler material and create a moisture resistant barrier when applied as an outer surface sealant.
Is it possible to speed up the curing time of epoxy resin?
It is possible to reduce epoxy resin curing time by raising the temperature of the environment where the project is being undertaken. (Every 10 degrees C in temperature increase reduces curing time by half.)
What safety precautions should be taken when working with epoxy resin?
Start with a clean and well-ventilated area. Wear gloves, protective clothing and eye protection. The work area should be covered with wax paper as epoxy resin will not stick to this material. Prepare a level area for your epoxy resin creations to dry where they will not be disturbed.
What can be created with epoxy resin?
We love to hear about and explore the many creative ideas and unique projects that epoxy resin artisans and DIY craftsmen construct. Crafters make items including jewelry, decorative door and cabinet knobs, and display items such as paperweights. Do-it-yourselfers apply epoxy resin to projects from home maintenance – repairing wooden door and window sills and columns – to furniture (table and bar tops, stools and chairs) to car (fenders, body panels) and boat repairs and construction (fiberglass reinforcement and repair).
Flexible epoxy resin may be poured into molds to create sculpture, figurines and other innovative decorative items – almost anything your creativity can conceive – may be coated with this polymer and perfectly and permanently preserved. Epoxy Resin – Protecting Keepsakes and Making Memories.
