Top 10 Epoxy Resin Myths Debunked

Epoxy resin has surged in popularity across various industries, from art and crafts to construction and marine applications. However, with its widespread use, numerous misconceptions have arisen, leading to confusion and potential mishandling. In this article, we will debunk the top 10 epoxy resin myths, providing clarity and accurate information to ensure your projects are successful.

1. Myth: Non-Yellowing Epoxy Resin Does Exist

Fact: With yellowing being such a well-known issue, it's not a surprise that the industry has developed products marketed as "non-yellowing epoxy resin". By nature, all epoxy resin will yellow over time. It's a chemical, and those chemical bonds will break and change. While there's no formula that's immune to yellowing, there are options designed to resist and manage yellowing more effectively than traditional formulas.

2. Myth: All Epoxy Resins Are the Same

Fact: Epoxy resins are diverse and tailored for specific applications. Variations exist in viscosity, curing times, pour depth, and heat resistance, among other properties. For instance, casting resins are designed for deep pours and glass like clarity, while coating resins are designed for surface applications. For example, our Table Top Epoxy is much harder than our Deep Pour Epoxy because it's designed to be used for table coatings and to take a much more aggressive beating. On the flip side, our Deep Pour Epoxy may not be as hard, but it's crystal clear and perfect for encapsulations and river tables.

3. Myth: Epoxy Resin Projects Are Too Difficult for Beginners

Fact: While working with epoxy resin requires planning and attention to detail, it's far from inaccessible to novices. Starting with simple projects and adhering to best practices can lead to quite impressive results. Numerous resources, kits, and tutorials are available to guide beginners through the process, making it an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

4. Myth: Epoxy Resin Will Cure at Any Temperature

Fact: Temperature plays a pivotal role in the curing process of epoxy resin. Optimal curing typically occurs in warm conditions, around 70-75F (21-24C). Temperatures outside this range can lead to issues: cooler environments may delay curing, while excessive heat can cause the resin to harden too quickly, resulting in defects.

5. Myth: Mixing Epoxy Resin is a Simple, Fast Process

Fact: Achieving the correct mixture of resin and hardener is essential for a successful project. Proper mixing requires patience and precision. To avoid bubbles, cloudiness, and curing issues, components should be mixed slowly and thoroughly, following the recommended mixing ratios and instructions for that specific epoxy product. Most of the time it should take 3-5 minutes to thoroughly mix our epoxy resin.

6. Myth: Epoxy Resin Is Safe Without Precautions

Fact: Safety should always be a priority when working with epoxy resin. It is a chemical after all. Although many modern resins are formulated to be user-friendly, it's essential to use proper ventilation, gloves and protective eyewear to prevent inhalation of fumes and skin irritation. If you are not working in an extremely well ventilated environment, please wear a respirator designed for vapors. Adhering to safety guidelines is especially important for large projects or prolonged exposure.

7. Myth: You Can Fix All Bubbles After Pouring

Fact: While it's possible to address some bubbles after pouring, prevention is more effective. Proper mixing techniques and working in optimal conditions can minimize bubble formation from the start. Once the resin is poured, using tools like heat guns or torches can help eliminate surface bubbles, but deeply embedded ones may be challenging to remove.

8. Myth: Epoxy Resin Is Only Suitable for Small Projects

Fact: Epoxy resin's versatility extends beyond small-scale applications. It's widely used in large projects, including flooring, countertops, and even boat construction. The key is selecting the right type of resin for your project, and following appropriate procedures to ensure structural integrity and aesthetic appeal.

9. Myth: Once Cured, Epoxy Resin Is Indestructible

Fact: Although cured epoxy resin is durable and resistant to many environmental factors, it's not entirely indestructible. It can be scratched, chipped, or damaged under extreme conditions. Proper care and maintenance are essential to preserve the longevity and appearance of epoxy resin surfaces.

That being said, it is still extremely strong! So strong that we put it to the test - watch us chuck an epoxy jar against a wall.

10. Myth: Epoxy Resin Only Adhere's to Wooden Surfaces

Fact: Epoxy resin exhibits excellent adhesion properties to a wide range of materials, including wood, metal, glass, ceramic, and concrete. However, surface preparation is crucial! Cleaning, sanding, and ensuring the surface is free from contaminants will enhance adhesion and result in a more durable bond.

Understanding the realities behind these common epoxy resin myths is vital for anyone looking to work with this versatile material. By dispelling misconceptions and embracing accurate information, you can approach your epoxy resin projects with confidence, ensuring safety, durability, and satisfaction in your creative endeavors.
