Jerome McCroy, of Jay Mac Customs, is an artist whose roots are deeply embedded in the Ridgewood section of Queens, New York. His artistic journey has been shaped by a rich tapestry of influences including hip hop, New York sports, graffiti, and the sprawling urban landscape of his hometown. Jerome’s evolution as an artist is marked by his dynamic exploration of various mediums, transitioning from pencils and inks on paper to spray paint on canvas, sneaker customization, and ultimately to custom wooden wall cutouts with striking resin finishes.
During the pandemic, Jerome's creative journey took a pivotal turn as he began to document his process on social media. This period not only intensified his artistic expression but also marked a significant shift from using traditional hand tools like jigsaws and circular saws to more advanced techniques, enhancing his craftsmanship since his initial forays into art over 15 years ago. Fueled by a desire to transition from the corporate retail world, Jerome fully embraced his passion to create art as a full-time endeavor.
"My projects are deeply rooted in my love for New York City's sports teams, reflecting my personal passions and the vibrant culture of the city. However, my artistic vision extends beyond sports, drawing on elements from fashion, sneakers, music, and pop culture. This broad spectrum of influences ensures that each piece of art I create is not just a decoration but an NYC story told through layers of wood and resin."
Today, Jerome's artwork is celebrated and collected by a diverse clientele, including over 1,000 customers through online sales, street fairs, and gallery exhibitions in New York City and at prestigious events like Art Basal in Miami. His unique pieces have not only attracted commissions from professional athletes, musicians, and influencers but have also served philanthropic purposes, with several of his artworks being donated to non-profits for auctions or as awards.
One of Jerome's recent significant contributions was leading an installation team in Times Square for Carlo's Bakery, where he oversaw the fabrication, delivery, and installation of over a dozen props, showcasing his versatility and leadership in large-scale artistic endeavors alike.
