Using & Drilling into Epoxy Resin – for Artisans & Do-It-Yourself Building & Repair Projects

DIY Epoxy Resin

Epoxy resin - that wonderful composite – so useful for a wide variety of projects. Artisans create craft pieces including jewelry, picture frames, and woodworking pieces; while home DIY projects include custom furniture, moldings and a wide variety of home accessories and accents. And anyone may have a need for an epoxy resin-based project such as flooring, countertops, and tabletops.

For our purposes here though, we’ll focus on those hardy souls who like to “get their hands dirty” and dig into home craft projects on their own. In particular, once a piece is created using epoxy resin – how to drill into the piece correctly for, for instance, hanging artwork, making a hole for a piece of jewelry, or other craft or building projects. The durable and flexible nature of epoxy also makes it a perfect material for many home repairs.

Once epoxy hardens, holes may be drilled through the resin. Crafter site ‘ Little Windows,’ explains "You can drill holes into or through your resin pieces. Then you can either glue in an eye-screw, or add a jump-ring or a wire through the hole. If your piece is clear, drill at an angle so the finding will hide the white drill line.'

Epoxy Resin Home Repairs

And using epoxy on wood for home repairs, ‘ The Family Handyman’ says, “Epoxy is the perfect material to make permanent repairs of rotting window sills, door jambs and exterior molding that are difficult to remove and expensive to replace. Epoxy is easy to handle too. You mix it, pour it and when it hardens, you can carve and sand it just like wood. It sticks like crazy and is formulated to flex and move with the wood, so it won't crack and fall out like some wood fillers.”

Additionally, the epoxy resin may be used for repairs in applications such as furniture or marine uses – where fasteners have become loosened due to use. The epoxy resin may be used to fill in the holes where screws reside, and once the composite has hardened, gives a much more stable bond than hardware alone. Several boating forums endorse this method including The Hull Truth.

Whether your project is large or small, handcrafted by you from scratch – or something needing repair; epoxy resin may be just the solution you need! Take a closer look at what epoxy can do for you HERE.
