We hear about many great sources of pride and satisfaction from epoxy resin artisans and craftsmen - not only due to the sense of accomplishment of a job well done; but also, the lasting joy from the beautiful aesthetic realized through the addition of an attractive furnishing added to their home or office.
A question we are often asked is how to keep these resin creations in good shape – polished and protected to ensure they're looking as great as the day they were created? Of course, one of the key reasons to use epoxy resin for furniture, flooring, and art fixtures is due to the incredible crystal-clear finish and a hard-shell protective coating. But even the toughest materials will show some wear over time. Here’s how you can restore your epoxy resin creations…
Keeping Epoxy Resin Surfaces Looking New
Light scratches or minor wear spots may be buffed out with a soft lint-free cloth (microfiber is good) and some epoxy resin polish. For slightly deeper abrasions and scratches, lightly sand the area until smooth – and wipe away any sanding debris. Then use polish and buff.
For deeper scratches, cracks or chips in an epoxy resin surface, clean the area to be repaired thoroughly with soap and water – you may have the brush the area to loosen debris as you don’t want any trapped in the repair. Once the scratch has been cleaned, it must be dried completely – wipe dry with a soft cloth – and you may want to use a hair dryer (or heat gun) for good measure.
Next, mix some epoxy resin on a small piece of cardboard, and using a craft stick, fill the area to be repaired completely – don’t worry about excess resin – that will be removed shortly. After the epoxy resin has filled the blemish, use a small flat-surfaced tool to remove the excess material and level the repair, (a ruler, old credit card, index card or dull (so it won’t scratch) razor blade work well).
Once the resin has cured (the hair dryer or heat gun mentioned above may be used to speed up this process); you'll want to lightly sand the repaired area to ensure its completely smooth – then wipe away any debris. Pour a fresh flood coat over the newly repaired surface – and your epoxy resin surface should be crystal-clear once again and ready for whatever life throws at it!
